Digital twin for the efficient, safe, and circular management of industrial water

Industrial water management is becoming a key challenge for manufacturers seeking to improve sustainability, operational efficiency and competitiveness. To address these challenges, SPIN is participating in BLUESTEEL, a collaborative innovation project focused on developing and validating a Digital Twin for the management of industrial water systems within a steel production environment.

The project will be implemented in a CELSA Group hot rolling mill, where data from industrial automation systems, SCADA platforms, IoT devices, advanced sensors and historical databases will be integrated into a unified digital environment. By combining real-time operational visibility with advanced analytics, the Digital Twin will support more informed decision-making, improved process control and greater efficiency across the plant’s water circuits.

A key objective of BLUESTEEL is to create a scalable and secure framework for industrial water management capable of reducing water consumption, improving traceability and quality control, anticipating operational incidents and optimising treatment processes. The project also explores the application of advanced digital technologies such as predictive analytics, Decision Support Systems (DSS) and Unified Namespace (UNS) architectures to transform operational data into actionable intelligence for plant operators and decision-makers

SPIN’s contribution

As a specialist in industrial automation, digitalisation and OT cybersecurity, SPIN leads the development of the project’s digital platform, the integration of operational data and the validation of the Digital Twin within the industrial environment. Leveraging decades of experience connecting OT and IT systems, SPIN contributes the expertise needed to ensure that data is securely collected, contextualised and made available to the right people at the right time.

The project also provides an opportunity to demonstrate how modern industrial data architectures, including Unified Namespace (UNS) principles, can help break down information silos and create a reliable foundation for future digitalisation initiatives. Through this approach, operational data becomes a strategic asset that supports efficiency, sustainability and continuous improvement.

A multidisciplinary consortium driving innovation

BLUESTEEL brings together organisations with complementary expertise across water management, digital technologies, industrial operations, sensing technologies and automation. Coordinated by the Catalan Water Partnership (CWP), CELSA Group provides the industrial environment and operational expertise, Aquater contributes with its deep water process know-how, ULBIOS Techsens brings advanced biosensing technologies, SPIN delivers the digitalisation, integration and cybersecurity capabilities that connect the different elements into a single industrial platform, and the Digital Cluster of Catalonia (Clúster Digital de Catalunya) facilitates collaboration and knowledge transfer. Together, the consortium creates an ecosystem able to address technical, operational and sustainability challenges from multiple perspectives and accelerate the adoption of innovative solutions in industry.
